Canadian precious metals producer Fortuna Mining has made a decisive move to strengthen its footprint in West Africa by agreeing to acquire the Bambadji gold exploration project in Senegal. The cash transaction, valued at 200 million dollars, involves purchasing the asset from industry majors Barrick Mining and IAMGOLD.
The deal grants Fortuna full control over two properties spanning 190 square kilometres. Strategically positioned along the highly prospective Senegal-Mali Shear Zone, the acquisition links directly with the company’s existing feasibility-stage Diamba Sud gold project. By consolidating these neighboring assets, the firm secures roughly 60 kilometres of continuous strike length within a renowned Tier 1 gold corridor that hosts several world-class mining operations.
Funding for the transaction came directly from the corporate treasury. Transaction disclosures show that a subsidiary of Barrick received 130.35 million dollars while an affiliate of IAMGOLD collected 69.65 million dollars. In addition to the cash payment, the agreement includes a 0.5 percent net smelter return royalty on the first 1.75 million ounces of gold produced from the Bambadji Nord property, split proportionally between the two sellers.
Company leadership noted that the substantial investment reflects the scale of the land package, extensive historical data, and multiple drill-defined targets that could materially expand future production potential near the planned Diamba Sud processing plant. To capitalize on these prospects, Fortuna has approved an immediate 8 million dollar exploration budget for the remainder of the year. The upcoming work program will incorporate approximately 51,000 metres of reverse circulation and diamond drilling targeting advanced zones.
This expansion in Senegal aligns with a broader strategic realignment by the corporation to optimize its regional asset portfolio. Industry analysts observe that the move allows the company to deepen its presence in a stable jurisdiction while streamlining operations across the wider West African mining landscape.
