The trajectory of modern telecommunications across the African continent cannot be told without centering Strive Masiyiwa, a visionary entrepreneur whose tenacity reshaped the corporate landscape. Born in Zimbabwe in 1961, Masiyiwa spent his formative years outside his home country, completing his secondary education in Scotland and earning a degree in electrical and electronic engineering from Cardiff University. He returned to Zimbabwe in 1984 following its independence, initially working as a telecommunications engineer for the state-owned telephone enterprise.
Driven by an ambition to alter the commercial sphere, Masiyiwa left public sector employment to establish an electrical contracting business that quickly expanded into a leading enterprise. As cellular technology emerged globally, he anticipated its potential for Africa and founded Econet Wireless in 1993. What followed was a landmark five-year constitutional legal battle against the state-owned telecommunications monopoly, which refused to grant his company a license. Masiyiwa successfully argued his case on the grounds of freedom of expression, resulting in a historic Supreme Court ruling that dismantled state monopolies and opened Africa’s telecommunications sector to private capital.
In 1998, he listed Econet Wireless Zimbabwe on the local stock exchange. He subsequently established the Econet Group and Cassava Technologies, expanding operations into a diversified international technology enterprise spanning digital platforms, data centres, cloud security, and cross-border fibre broadband networks. Beyond his corporate footprint, Masiyiwa has served in prominent global leadership capacities, including acting as an African Union Special Envoy for the COVID-19 response and heading the Africa Vaccine Acquisition Task Team. Alongside his wife, Tsitsi Masiyiwa, he co-founded the Higherlife Foundation, which has provided hundreds of thousands of educational scholarships for vulnerable children across Africa. He maintains seats on several international boards, including Netflix and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
