The Nigerian Communications Commission has issued a sharp warning regarding the return of call masking across domestic networks, declaring the illicit rerouting practice an act of financial subversion. Emerging from its 110th governing board meeting, the commission stated that disguising foreign calls to look like local numbers threatens national security, drains corporate earnings, and destabilizes digital trust. With operators having deployed 8,526 of their 12,179 committed capacity sites, regulators are moving aggressively to protect infrastructure value.

Call masking tricks network systems by making international communications appear as domestic traffic, allowing bad actors to evade proper settlement rates. This evasion starves compliant carriers of rightful income and creates an uneven playing field. Beyond corporate balance sheets, the obfuscation weakens accountability measures vital for tracking fraud and safeguarding mobile platforms deeply tied to banking and everyday commerce.

To combat the threat, the commission is deploying advanced oversight tools. The Device Management System is already active to block compromised hardware, and the upcoming introduction of the Telecommunications Identity Risk Management System in October aims to tighten verification protocols. Officials emphasize that enforcement will involve close coordination with security agencies to root out perpetrators and restore market transparency.

The resurgence of call masking shifts the conversation from a minor technical glitch to a critical test of corporate governance. For executive leadership teams across telecommunications, banking, and technology sectors, network integrity is no longer just an IT concern. As digital identities link directly to financial assets and national security, boards must treat communication channels as core risk assets. Protecting the digital economy requires rigorous internal monitoring, verified routing partnerships, and proactive defense strategies to ensure that connectivity remains secure and trusted.
